About Aston and Nechells Foodbank

Our foodbank is a project founded by local churches and community groups, working together towards stopping hunger in our local areas of Aston, Nechells and Washwood Heath in Birmingham.  We opened in November 2011 and since then have given out in excess of 100 tonnes of food, all of it donated to us.

We are an entirely voluntary run foodbank having over 100 regular volunteers working in our three distribution centres, our warehouse, and helping with local and national supermarket collections.  In 2015 – 2016 we helped 3,066 people including 1,191 children under the age of 16.

The areas we principally serve have some of the highest unemployment rates in the whole of the UK.  In 2017, Aston Ward was the 2nd highest ward in the UK.  Each ward has in excess of 11 per cent of people claiming universal credit.  The great majority of people we help are not in paid employment.

We are always keen to welcome new volunteers to help with distribution, warehousing, or collections. Our volunteers come from across our many different multi-ethnic communities aged between 18 and 80.  Some are seeking employment, others volunteer around shift patterns and carers commitments.  We are a very friendly bunch, always keen to welcome new helpers.
