National food collection at Tesco, 20th – 22nd August 2020

19th August 2020

Every larger Tesco store in the country is about to run a summer food collection where customers will be encouraged to donate items of food.  This will be over three days from Thursday 20th to Saturday 22nd August 2020.

Special donation points will be put up at Aston Lane Tesco supermarket in order for food to be donated to Aston and Nechells Foodbank.

If you are shopping there between Thursday and Saturday, please consider donating items.  We are in particular need of:

Shampoo

Shower gel

Deodorant

Razor blades

Tinned rice pudding

Tinned fish

Cartons of juice

The collection has been organised by Tesco in direct response to the extra pressures placed on food banks within the Trussell Trust’s network during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The summer collection will be in addition to the pre-Christmas Tesco Food Collection Tesco holds annually in November and the supermarket will top up all customer donations with an additional 20% donation.

Tesco Director David Page comments:  “We have worked closely with both the Trussell Trust and FareShare throughout the pandemic. They have faced greater demand than ever before. During the lockdown Tesco donated £15m of food which they badly needed, but the demand is still there, so we are calling on our customers to help us help these two important charities in their vital work of feeding people in these really difficult times.”

To help with social distancing, we will not be handing out leaflets to shoppers arriving at the store and we will have a smaller volunteer presence than normal.

Please do spread the word about this collection to friends and neighbours.
